The cut of a diamond is the most important factor in determining the value of a diamond, because it has the greatest influence on the beauty of the diamond and its brilliance. Other factors include the weight, color and clarity of the diamond. The four factors that influence the value of a diamond are internationally called the 4Cs, i.e. cut (cut), Carat (weight), color (color) and clarity (purity). Of all the four factors, the quality of diamond grinding is technically the most difficult to analyze.

The quality of the grinding does not mean the grinding method used, but the correct proportions, symmetry and how carefully the grinding and polishing of the diamond has been carried out. When the diamond is cut to a high quality, the dimensions, facets and reference sets of the diamond tend to create a perfect interaction with light. Diamond grinding requires the right proportions, so that the light directed at it is reflected back through the largest bevel at the top of the stone, i.e. the face of the diamond. The lower part of the stone cannot be too deep or shallow, but just the right length so that the stone looks bright and lively.

In heart cutting, there are generally accepted dimensions for the diamond, which give the diamond as much brilliance as possible. By dimensions, we mean the ratio of the table and the total height of the stone to the diameter of the stone, i.e. the size of the brilliant. If the diamond is cut too low, the light escapes from the bottom, and correspondingly, if it is cut too deep, the light escapes from the sides. In a heart cut, a good diamond height to diameter ratio is the same as that of a brilliant, i.e. 60.1–61.9 percent. In a well-done heart grinding, the ratio of the length and width of the stone should be close to 1, i.e. the width and length of the stone should be the same size.
