Tor was the Viking god of thunder. Tor used his hammer to rule and dispense justice. During a thunderstorm, Tor was believed to ride in a chariot drawn by a buck-train across the sky. The blows of the hammer created a thunderous roar, the sparks a lightning bolt. The pendant representing the hammer became a common symbol of the Tor, believed to also contain powers of protection from evil. The pendant was worn especially by the fierce Vikings. The jewellery dates back to the Viking Age, from the 800s to the 1050s. The larger pendant was found in Ylipää in Liedo, while the smaller one was found in the folk school pendant in Laitila.
