To preserve the shine and beauty of jewelry, it should be cleaned at regular intervals. All gemstones - especially diamonds - lose much of their luster if they are dirty or greasy. Dirt stuck on, for example, the inner surface of the ring can also cause skin irritation.

It is important for all jewelry to regularly clean it, take it off at night, and store it correctly in, for example, a soft cloth bag, original packaging or jewelry box. This guarantees that the jewelry remains beautiful and in as good condition as possible. Diamond jewelry should be serviced every 1-2 years by a goldsmith who, in addition to cleaning and polishing, also checks the setting of the diamonds.

In this publication, we go through jewelry cleaning and cleaning instructions based on different jewelry materials, and give tips for storing jewelry.

Jewelry cleaning and care instructions

Cleaning and care of jewelry with a cleaning cloth

The easiest way to clean traces of darkening, loose dust and other impurities from jewelry is with Laatukoru's own cleaning cloth . With the jewelry cleaning cloth, you clean gold, silver and steel products quickly and gently. Our cleaning cloth contains only natural ingredients and is suitable for most common materials, including watches.

Cleaning of diamond and gold jewelry

The diamond and gold jewelry sold by Laatukoru is primarily made of 14K gold (585/1000), but also 18K gold (750/1000). The best way to maintain diamond and gold jewelry is to bring it to, for example, our store, from where it is sent to the workshop for processing by professional goldsmiths. In our workshop, the jewelry is cleaned, polished and the stone settings are checked for a fee. The cleaning of diamond jewelry and gold jewelry in our workshop is done with detergents and tools especially intended for jewelry cleaning, such as an ultrasonic cleaner. After processing in our workshop, the jewelry will be almost like new!

You should also regularly clean diamond and gold jewelry yourself. For example, try Hagerty Jewel Clean . Cleaning can also be done with ordinary dishwashing detergent. It is important to rinse the jewelry with plenty of water after cleaning and dry it carefully with a soft cloth.

Cleaning and care of silver jewelry

Darkening over time is characteristic of silver jewelry and should not be alarmed. With proper maintenance, silver jewelry and other silver items can be almost as good as new, even if they have darkened over time. There are many different cleaning agents available for silver jewelry in our online store, which can be used to clean them easily. Silver jewelry can be cleaned with a silver cleaning cloth, for example, or a silver cleaning agent is suitable for slightly more demanding cleaning.

Silver jewelry can also be cleaned with regular dishwashing detergent (removes grease and dirt, but dishwashing detergent does not clean silver from darkening, you need cleaning agents intended for silver cleaning). After treatment with a cleaning agent, the silver jewelry should be rinsed under plenty of water and dried carefully with a soft cloth.

Cleaning of bronze jewelry

Bronze is an alloy of copper, tin and zinc, which is characterized by faster tarnishing than precious metals. The new bronze jewelry has a lacquer surface that protects the jewelry, which prevents the dark color characteristic of bronze from coming off on the skin or sensitive light materials. The varnish surface may be damaged by the effect of various chemicals and wears out during use. It is recommended to remove jewelry during sports, saunas and swimming in salty or chlorinated water.

Bronze jewelry can be cleaned in mild dishwashing liquid. After treatment with a cleaning agent, bronze jewelry should be rinsed under plenty of water and dried carefully with a soft cloth. The bronze jewelry we sell is all made by Kalevala and, if necessary, they can be sent for cleaning for a fee.

Pearl jewelry cleaning and care

Pearls must be cared for properly so that their beauty remains unchanged from year to year. Pearl jewelry should also not be stored in the same box together with other jewelry. Beads should be put on last and taken off first. After use, the beads should be carefully wiped with a clean, soft cloth. Deodorants, hair sprays, skin creams and perfumes may gradually change the color of the pearl and reduce its luster. Sweating and excessive contact with water should also be avoided with pearl jewelry.

A few times a year, the pearls can be washed with a hand-warm, very mild dishwashing detergent solution. After treatment with a cleaning agent, pearl jewelry should be rinsed under plenty of water and dried carefully with a soft cloth.

We recommend bringing the pearl jewelry to our store for maintenance every 1-2 years, when their braiding is checked and, if necessary, the knots are re-tied.

Swarovski jewelry cleaning

Swarovski jewelry is coated jewelry metal and requires special care to preserve its shine and beauty. Swarovski jewelry should be the last to put on and the first to take off. They should be wiped with a soft cloth after use. Swarovski jewelry must be removed before washing hands, swimming, playing sports, or using skin care products (soaps, greases, perfumes, and hairsprays), as they may damage the jewelry. You should also avoid getting the jewelry wet.

Swarovski jewelry should be stored in a soft cloth bag or in their original packaging to avoid excessive rubbing.

Proper storage of jewelry

When jewelry is not in use, it should be stored properly to avoid mechanical wear and environmental effects. You often hear that jewelry is stored, for example, in a bedside drawer (without protection) or in a box in the bathroom. In principle, these are not recommended storage methods, because moisture is not good for jewelry and jewelry that rotates freely in the box gets a lot of mechanical wear.

When jewelry is not being used, we recommend storing it primarily in a box or pouch intended for storing jewelry. The jewelry box that came with the jewelry also works well for storage. Check out jewelry boxes here .
