Brilliant Cut Diamond

A brilliant-cut diamond is the most used form of diamond cut. The shape of a brilliant-cut diamond is round and it has a total of 56 facets, i.e. smooth ground and polished surface, as well as a table and a possible culet. An upper and lower part can be defined for a brilliant-cut diamond: the upper part has a table, 8 star facets, 8 kite facets and 16 upper girdle facets, and the lower part has 16 lower girdle facets, 8 pavilion main facets and a possible culet.

Brilliant cut is designed in such a way that it returns the light falling on it as well as possible. This quality is called brilliance. The brilliance can be white or rainbow-colored light. The part of the colored splendor is called fire. In addition to brilliance and fire, the diamond's light properties have a third designation, sparkle. The sparkle of a diamond refers to the combination of the light reflected directly from the facets of the upper part of the stone and the brilliance reflected from the lower part. The sparkle makes the diamond look alive as it moves.

The Correct Proportions of a Brilliant Cut Diamond

The cut of a diamond is the most important factor in determining the value of a diamond, because it has the greatest influence on the beauty of the diamond and its brilliance. Other factors include the weight, color and clarity of the diamond. The four factors that influence the value of a diamond are internationally called the 4Cs, i.e. cut, carat, color and clarity. Of all the four factors, the quality of diamond cut is technically the most difficult to analyze.

The quality of cut does not mean the cutting method used, but how carefully and symmetrically the cutting and polishing work has been carried out. When the diamond is cut to a high quality, the dimensions, facets and reference sets of the diamond tend to create a perfect interaction with light. Diamond cutting requires the right proportions, so that the light directed at it is reflected back through the largest bevel at the top of the stone, i.e. the face of the diamond. The lower part of the stone cannot be too deep or shallow, but just the right length so that the stone looks bright and lively.

In brilliant cutting, there are generally accepted dimensions for the diamond, which give the diamond as much brilliance as possible. By dimensions, we mean the ratio of the table and the total height of the stone to the diameter of the stone, i.e. the size of the brilliant. If the diamond is cut too low, the light escapes from the bottom, and correspondingly, if it is cut too deep, the light escapes from the sides. The optimal ratio of the face of the diamond to the diameter is 55–57 percent and the ratio of the height to the diameter is 60.1–61.9 percent. The optimal aspect ratio affects the brilliance of the diamond and makes it appear larger than its actual size.
