Orthodox Cross Pendants

Here you'll find classic Orthodox cross pendants in both 14 karat yellow gold and silver. Orthodox cross pendants are made in Finland. Orthodox crosses are a popular choice as a confirmation pendant or christening jewelry, and you can order them directly ready-engraved and gift-wrapped.

Saurum's silver Orthodox crosses include a pendant chain. For gold Orthodox crosses, the pendant chain can be ordered separately and you can select it directly from the product page (45cm Venetian chain).

What is an Orthodox cross?

The Orthodox cross is the best-known symbol of the Orthodox Church. The Orthodox cross is also known as the Slavic cross. Unlike the traditional Latin cross, the Orthodox design has three crossbars, each with its own meaning:

• Top crossbar: Represents the inscription (titulus) placed above Jesus's head, which read "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews".
• Middle crossbar: The longest crossbar, to which Christ's hands were nailed.
• Bottom, slanted crossbar: Represents a footrest. Its slanted position is symbolic: the upper end points toward heaven (the repentant thief) and the lower end toward damnation (the unrepentant thief). It reminds us of choices and justice.

In addition to the Slavic cross, other cross designs can also be seen in the Orthodox Church, for example the simple Latin cross with only one crossbar, and the plus-shaped Greek cross. All crosses are dear to Christians.

In Orthodox tradition, the cross is not merely decoration but a "sign of victory" and a reminder of Christ's resurrection. That is why many Orthodox believers always carry a cross with them as protection and a profession of faith.
