A lab grown diamond sparkles like a natural diamond and cannot be distinguished from one another with the naked eye. The durability and hardness is also like that of a natural diamond, so a ring with a synthetic diamond can withstand use like a natural diamond ring.

Laboratory Diamond Price

The origin of the diamond does not affect the properties of the diamond, a synthetic lab grown diamond is as hard, durable and refracting as a mined natural diamond. Instead, the origin of the diamond affects the price of the diamond. The price of a lab grown diamond is cheaper than a natural diamond. In large carat weights, the price can be up to 40–50 percent cheaper than the price of a natural diamond. In smaller carat weights of the diamond, the price difference decreases. Lab grown diamond is renewable and can be produced indefinitely, while natural diamond is no longer renewable, although it is still mined. As the production methods of synthetic diamonds, i.e. laboratory diamonds, develop and the supply increases, the competition also gets tougher and it is possible that the value of lab grown diamonds will decrease in the future. Therefore, lab grown diamonds should not be purchased as an investment, as there is no guarantee that they will retain their value.

What is a Lab Grown Diamond?

Just like a natural diamond, a lab created diamond is also a real diamond. It completely matches the chemical structure of a mined natural diamond, and its hardness and light refraction properties are the same as natural diamonds. Lab grown diamonds must be distinguished from diamond imitations, such as cubic zirconia or moissanite, which do not match the properties of a real diamond and cannot be classified as such.

The difference between lab grown diamonds and natural diamonds is found in their origin. A lab diamond is grown under controlled laboratory conditions, while a natural diamond is born beneath the Earth’s crust. In a laboratory, a diamond develops in a few weeks, and a natural diamond, on the other hand, has developed deep in the soil for billions of years.

A synthetic diamond is so close to a natural diamond in its properties that even experienced gemmologists have a hard time distinguishing lab grown diamonds from natural diamonds just by looking through a loupe. Laboratory diamonds can be identified using special technology, and responsible laboratory diamond suppliers engrave small markings on the diamonds to identify them.

Manufacturing Synthetic Diamond in the Laboratory

The first successful man made diamond was already made in the 1950s. The method at that time was the HPHT method, i.e. High Pressure - High Temperature, which imitates the natural diamond creation process in laboratory conditions. As the name suggests, this method uses high pressure and heat.

The HPHT method is still in use, but it was later joined by another method: CVD, i.e. Chemical Vapor Deposition . The CVD method utilizes heat and a hydrocarbon gas mixture. When the gas mixture is heated with an energy source, carbon atoms are released from it, which accumulate on the growth medium, growing the diamond. The CVD method has proven to be more efficient than the HPHT method, especially when the goal is to produce a diamond that is as pure and large as possible. As a method, CVD is more cost-effective and it is possible to more effectively control the quality of the diamond, such as the number of inclusions.

However, the environmental friendliness of a laboratory diamond compared to a natural diamond is not a given. The production of lab grown diamonds consumes a lot of energy, and on the other hand, natural diamonds can also be produced sustainably. The market for mined diamonds is controlled by certificates and, for example, the origin of GIA-certified diamonds can be traced very precisely. GIA-certified diamonds have been produced in accordance with internationally recognized labor, trade and environmental friendliness standards, and at the same time they promote the transparency of the diamond trade.
