Decades of persistent product development has made the Seiko 5 automatic watch the pinnacle of its field. The Seiko 5 gets its name from the combination of five important features of a watch: automatic movement, date display, water resistance, recessed crown and durable construction.
Today's Seiko 5 automatic watches still cherish the same traditions as the first version of the collection created 50 years ago. Durability even in challenging conditions and longevity have been emphasized in the design of the watch. Seiko 5 Sports Automatic watches are made of stainless steel and mainly fall under the ATM 10 water resistance class, which means they are water resistant up to 100 meters. So you can also go swimming with a timelessly stylish watch in your hand.
Features of Seiko 5 Watches
Seiko 5 automatic watches have a long tradition, as its first version was released already in 1963. At that time, the wristwatches that went by the name Sportsmatic 5 were waterproof automatic watches with unique features. Later, the company lasered the Seiko 5 Sports series, which utilized the best features of the Sportmatic 5 watch, and in addition, its water resistance was improved and Hardlex glass and a rotating bezel were added to the watches. The current Seiko 5 watches get their name from five important features: automatic movement, day movement, water resistance, recessed crown and durable construction. In addition to this, Seiko 5 watches have a day of the week and date display as well as strongly luminescent indexes and hands.
The watches of the Seiko 5 collection are perfect for everyday use. Seiko 5 is a relaxed and stylish watch that is suitable for the office as well as for leisure time. You can wear the watch while playing sports and even swimming without worry, because several watches in the Seiko 5 collection have a 100-meter water resistance rating. The durable materials and numerous features of the watch make this watch excellent in terms of price-quality ratio. The Seiko 5 collection includes watches for men and women. There are plenty of color and material options, but the overall look of the collection is elegant and timeless, which guarantees the wearer a long-lasting watch.
The Story of Seiko Watches
The Seiko 5 collection began in 1963, but Seiko's history stretches back to 1881, when Kintarō Hattori opened a watch and jewelry store in Tokyo. Hattori started his business by repairing watches, but a little later he founded a watch factory together with engineer Tsuruhiko Yoshikawa. The factory was named Seikosha. Seikosha released its first pocket watch in 1895 and its first wristwatch in 1913. The great earthquake in 1923 was a turning point for Seikosha and the Seiko watches that followed. When Seikosha's factories and warehouse were destroyed, Hattori did not give up but rebuilt his factory. A year later, the first Seiko watch was released.
Product development plays a big role in Seiko's story, and over the decades it has brought to the market several significant inventions in the watch industry, such as the world's first quartz watch and kinetic technology. Even today, Seiko watches are known for their uniquely high technology and their product development is unparalleled. Seiko is also known for the elegant and valuable appearance of its watches. Seiko has been successful not only in product development but also in designing timepieces for more than a hundred years.
Seiko as the Creator of Significant Innovations in the Watch Industry
Seiko means 'excellent' in Japanese, and the aim of Seiko's founder has always been to be one step ahead of the competition. The company has succeeded in its goal both by Japanese standards and worldwide. In the 1950s, the company was the first to release an automatic wristwatch in Japan, and its Diashock shock absorption technology was better than any Japanese competitor at the time. Entering the 1960s, the company released the first Grand Seiko watch, aiming to be the world's best in precision and accuracy.
In 1964, Seiko was the official timekeeper of the Tokyo Olympics and it offered 1200 different stopwatches for timing the Olympics. As a tribute to the event, it released the Crown Chronograph, the first chronograph watch on the Japanese market. The chronograph was followed by the first diver's watch on the Japanese market, the Seiko Divers 150M, which is also the origin of the Seiko Prospex sports watch collection. In February 1969, Seiko launched the world's first automatic chronograph, and in the same year the company also released the world's first watch with a quartz movement.
Seiko's innovations also include the Spring Drive movement, which is considered the most significant invention since the release of the quartz movement. In the Spring Drive mechanism, the escapement characteristic of mechanical watches has been replaced by a Tri-syncro regulator. In this way, an extremely accurate and elegantly finished mechanism has been created, with a second hand that moves smoothly without the stepping typical of mechanical and quartz watches.
